As our partner, the Shakespeare's Globe, announces its Winter 2021/22 season for its indoor theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, we thought we’d share their video, not simply to encourage all who can go to go, but also to give you a taste of what you might expect from the reconstructed Teatro San Cassiano
Designed and built by Jon Greenfield and Peter McCurdy respectively, and with natural candle-light by Martin White (all of whom now lead our future build team), the playhouse was erected inside the grounds of the Globe in 2014 and is a purpose-built reimagination of a Jacobean indoor theatre, such as originally existed in Blackfriars on the north side of the Thames.
Back in 2014, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse hosted the Royal Opera House’s staging of Francesco Cavalli’s L’Ormindo (which premiered at the Teatro San Cassiano in 1644). As wonderful as Christian Curnyn’s Early Opera Company were, there was for us an element of sadness given that there is currently no comparable theatre in Venice by which to celebrate its great legacy to the world.
Nonetheless, and without doubt, the production was a huge success and gave a tantalising insight into just how intimate, immediate and intense opera can be seen when experienced up close and personal.
